Safe Schools: More than a presence in the hallway
Safety can look like a uniform in the hallway. It can sound like a quick “How are you doing?” between classes. Sometimes, it’s simply knowing there’s someone nearby you can trust.
As Safe Schools Week wraps up, we want to highlight the SROs who give our students a sense of security every day.
For our SROs, school safety is about being present, building relationships, and becoming a trusted part of the school community.
“The relationship between an SRO, students, and school staff is important because if we can all work together, we can create a safe, supportive and positive school environment," said CCPS Police Chief James Hall.
From mentoring students and supporting school events to promoting school safety activities, our SROs are a familiar presence throughout our schools. They interact with students and staff in hallways and lunchrooms and maintain a visible presence throughout the school day.
“Our goal is for students to see SROs as friendly and respectful and to feel comfortable approaching them when they feel unsafe or need help,” Hall said.
While Safe Schools Week gives us a chance to recognize the importance of school safety, that commitment doesn't last just one week.
“School safety is our number one priority,” Hall said. “We work hard every day to ensure that our facilities are as safe as possible, and we do this by building relationships with the students and staff.”
This week, and every week, we’re grateful for the SROs who help our students and staff feel safe and supported.
