CCPS Art Camp encourages creativity, new experiences

For one week this summer, the Cardinal Community Center became a creative learning space for 16 students participating in the CCPS Creative Art Camp.

Led by eight CCPS educators, K-5th grade students participated in daily rotations focused on visual art, music, dance, theater, and other hands-on creative activities.

Now in its second year, the camp was created to give students meaningful summer experiences while providing an alternative to increased screen time.

For Baker art teacher Molly O'Nan, one of the most rewarding parts of the week was seeing students form new connections through creativity.

"What I enjoyed most about art camp this year was watching the new friendships form amongst the campers," Ms. O'Nan said. "It was neat to see elementary students from across the district bond over their artmaking/interests and make plans to continue the friendship."

The daily rotations allowed students to experience each of the four art disciplines while trying activities they may not have encountered otherwise.

Instructor Matt Leedy brings the fun and energy as students make music with boomwhackers.

Students created artwork, explored performance opportunities, and worked together throughout the week.

"Our little creators went totally wild with color and imagination, turning every day into an art party," said Matt Leedy, music teacher at Baker. "It was fun to let them make new friends, try awesome new skills, and show off their masterpieces with the biggest smiles."

With a diversity of activities, the camp showcased the power of the arts.

"It was a joy to watch students explore music in creative and engaging ways while building their confidence and enthusiasm," said Krista Knox, Conkwright music teacher. "Seeing students grow in both their musical abilities and their love for the arts was a wonderful reminder of the positive impact that creative learning experiences can have on young learners."

Camp Director Christy Bush, who started the camp in 2025, said it's a chance for students to explore new creative outlets. "Students have a chance to immerse themselves in instruction and artistic activities they might not otherwise experience," she said. "They are able to develop new skills, discover interests, and connect with classmates from across the district."
