What happens when you bring construction equipment, emergency vehicles, and big rigs to an elementary school?

At Shearer Elementary, it turned into an unforgettable day of hands-on learning through the “Touch-a-Truck” event.

Career exploration doesn’t have to wait until high school, and that truth was on full display.

The school's back parking lot transformed into an interactive learning space where children explored everything from construction equipment and specialized machinery, to emergency vehicles and delivery trucks.

"Students have the unique opportunity to climb into the driver’s seats, explore the equipment, and hear directly from the people who operate it every day," said Shearer FRYSC Coordinator Kristi Carter. "They are not only introduced to a wide range of essential career paths, but the experience helps them understand the importance of safety protocols in their community."

Business and community participation was high, the weather was outstanding, and the students were excited.

“This is about sparking curiosity early,” said Ms. Carter said. “When students can see these careers up close, it helps them begin to imagine what their own futures could look like. It's important for them to understand the vital roles these industries play in everyday life."

Thank you to the 19 business and community members who brought vehicles and made this day special for our students.

"Touch A Truck humanizes our local workforce, allowing students to build positive relationships with the linemen, firemen, and other local businesses & community members who keep Winchester running," Ms. Carter said. "It fosters a sense of curiosity and community pride, reminding our kids that they are part of a hardworking, interconnected network of professionals.
